Teenage Engineering’s voice
Write with directness, curiosity, and a playful, slightly irreverent streak. Pair concise product facts with language that makes experimentation feel inviting. The voice can be technically specific without becoming stiff, and it can use unusual imagery or a teasing question to open a story.
Write in lowercase, as teenage engineering does, and keep product names such as OP–1 and OP–XY in capitals with an en dash.
- “we wanted to stay true to the feeling of recording at home with your 4-track. but to be honest, sometimes it’s nice to get a do-over”
- “adjust attack and length, introduce rhythmic variations with the funk parameter, or add randomization to every sound on every hit”
- “THIS SHADOW IS unrealistically LONG... ARE YOU HIDING SOMETHING?”
Dos and don’ts
Do
- Use the TE logo for identity work, in black, white or light grey.
- Keep core layouts high-contrast and restrained, with black and white doing the structural work.
- Let product details remain clear, and use imagery to make sound, creative practice, and experimentation tangible.
- Write in a direct, curious, playful voice; pair practical product information with a memorable turn of phrase.
Don’t
- Don’t recolor the TE logo in the accent colors or redraw its shapes.
- Don’t replace the black-and-white foundation with decorative color; keep orange, yellow, blue and red as accents.
- Don’t make product or editorial writing sound generic, overly formal, or detached from creative use.
- Don’t use teasing or irreverent language in a way that obscures essential product information.
More from the Brand Skill
Imagery
Show Teenage Engineering products as distinctive, tactile instruments and tools. Use the brand’s own product, campaign, and editorial imagery to preserve their actual forms and design details. Product imagery ranges from isolated product views to colorful, characterful campaign scenes; choose the treatment that fits the specific product or story rather than forcing one universal look.
Editorial imagery can include musicians, designers, studios, performance, and place. Keep the product in a genuine creative context and let the story’s subject feel human and specific. The brand’s own product interface and guide imagery are also useful references for product-led work.
Imagery editorial
Use brand-owned editorial, campaign, magazine, and press imagery to guide storytelling around products, creative practice, and music culture.
Imagery products
Use the brand’s product and catalog imagery as a reference for product appearance, range, and store presentation. Preserve the products’ actual colors, proportions, details, and names when depicting specific models.
